A small station with a busy timetable! People of Stockton, Thornaby, Ingleby Barwick, Billingham and Norton often turn to Thornaby for their transport needs. The station is operated by Transpennine Express and has services to many of the main towns in the North of England. You can catch a train directly to Manchester Airport from here.
The station was originally created to serve the busy ports at the mouth of the Tees. However, after the Second World War and due to increasing de-industrialisation of the area, it fell into disrepair. By the early 1980s, the station was demolished.
However, Thornaby Railway Station experienced a reprieve in the form of Durham University Queen’s Campus which sits on the nearby Teesdale development area. It was the introduction of the First TransPennine Express to Manchester Airport which sparked a revival of the station. It was given a £500,000 facelift in 2003.
The station now boasts two platforms, a waiting area and ticket office.
Thornaby Railway Station is best accessed by car. You can catch a bus that stops in Stockton Town Centre, but you are looking at around a 20 minute walk to the station from Stockton.
Despite the station being named Thornaby, it is actually 2 miles from Thornaby’s town centre.
There is parking capacity for 64 cars and the car park is pay and display.
